CAPSTONE: El Santísimo by Juan Reyes El Santísimo (The Most Holy One) is a series of work that relates to my own experiences as an emerging artist. A number of occurrences in my life have inspired me and forced me to create the following imagery that you see today. El Santísimo analyzes my interrelationships with the portrait as a medium for communication towards the other; the portrait is the medium to elicit communication and reflection towards the other.

In Meatabulous, my hope is to bring attention to the cruelty endured by animals that are slaughtered by the billions under the pretense of “feeding” Americans. Meatabulous depicts a glamorous slaughterhouse that speaks to the inhumane treatment of farm animals.

The idea for this project sparked while kayaking in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, observing pelicans dive-bombing into the water and other animals hunting with intense energy and skill. We often see these animals at rest, but it is difficult to find them in action.
